About Us
Common Field, Inc. is a not-for-profit, which was formed for the specific purpose of acquiring and holding real estate, to be used for conservation, preservation, or recreational purposes for/or by the general public.
We have acquired more than 50 parcels of vacant land, forests, fields, stream, hills, cliffs, wet-lands and historical sites in Central and Northern New York to preserve forever the natural environment for the public good.
The majority of these parcels are preserved as natural forest land, for the conservation of natural resources, and are available to the public for recreational use, including: trail hiking, running and walking, X-C skiing, snow shoeing, camping, picnic spots, fishing, nature trails, outdoor sports, theme camps, drum/bonfire circle, cabins, shelters, primitive pursuits, wilderness survival, orienteering, plant and animal identification, nature study and observation, photography, relaxation and retreat, scenic views, natural inspirational settings - and fun!
Many of these parcels are protected for the preservation of fragile natural environments, ecosystems, forests, streams, wetlands, unique habitats, etc.; for their direct or indirect impact on the general public's health and enjoyment, forever. Some other parcels are protected to preserve historical sites and/or buildings for the benefit of the general public by promoting the education and study of local history and this valuable connection to our past.
The development of outdoor playing fields on one particular site in Lansing (Tompkins County) is in progress. This development includes soccer fields, sand volleyball courts, ice rink, X-C ski/trail, and warming hut. Several other parcels have accessible waterfront and aquatic resources currently used for swimming, fishing, canoeing, sailing, ice skating, study, research, unique atmosphere, rest and relaxation and other water related activities.
Other parcels have old railroad beds that are used for an interlocking system of snowmobile trails. More parcels offer unique opportunities for the (future) use or development of street sports, downhill skiing, hang gliding, radio controlled aircraft/rocketry area, sustainable forestry activities, woodsman tools and skills, tree and wood identification, maple sap collection and sugar making, small natural history huts, natural energy production, design, and experimentation (using the wind, sun, water or any other green source), organic farming (plants and animals), a petting zoo, and a community area for the promotion of the reduction, reuse, and recycling of unwanted waste products, a warehouse, studio/gallery, and an open air public market/trading center.
All of the properties owned and managed by the corporation provide for the protection and preservation of beautiful undeveloped land, which will conserve valuable natural resources such as plants, animals, scenic views, quiet open space, natural healthy ecosystems, all of which provide significant benefits directly or indirectly to the general public. Volunteer work groups continue with construction of the new trails, campsites, historic preservation and research, and athletic field construction and maintenance.
